The Kaombe Community Development Trust - website launched
18 October, 2026
Agricane is thrilled to announce the launch of the new website for its partner, the Kaombe Community Development Trust (KCDT).
KCDT is a development organization with a difference - reinvesting proceeds from sugarcane production to provide reliable, long-term funding for community-led initiatives in the Lower Shire Valley where climate vulnerability, poor infrastructure and limited economic opportunities continue to drive poverty. This sustainable funding model also allows KCDT to offer development partners up to US$300,000 annually in matched funding.
Meanwhile as KCDT’s technical partner, Agricane provides project engineering, construction oversight, and technical management to ensure resulting infrastructure is built to last.
KCDT is a community-led organization, meaning that initiatives are identified and prioritized by local communities, coordinated by the KCDT Trust Committee, and implemented through recognized government development structures like Area Development Committees. This ensures investment and effort is directed by communities themselves, responds to genuine priorities, and aligns with wider district development plans.

Established in 2009 by Agricane and Illovo Sugar Malawi, KCDT and its development partners like Total Energies, Unitrans, and Agricane have invested more than US$550,000 in initiatives supporting education, healthcare, clean water, conservation, agricultural livelihoods, and construction of community infrastructure including school classrooms, clinics, boreholes and flood drainage – helping to improve livelihoods, opportunities, access to essential services, and quality of life across the communities it works with.
