Agricane and the SVTP

The Shire Valley Transformation Project (SVTP) is transforming agriculture across Malawi’s Lower Shire Valley, creating opportunities for 48,000 households through 44,000 hectares of large-scale irrigation infrastructure, farmer cooperatives, and commercial farming systems supported by Agricane’s technical and operational expertise.

The SVTP is a major World Bank-funded agricultural development program aimed at transforming agricultural productivity and boosting the incomes of 48,000 households across the Lower Shire Valley through large-scale irrigation and water management infrastructure. A central challenge of the project is the transition from fragmented, rain-fed smallholder farming toward coordinated irrigated agriculture operating at commercial scale.

Agricane supports the SVTP by managing its gravity-fed irrigation network and coordinating farmer cooperatives across the region. Agricane will also play a key operational role in supporting target communities through technical advisory services, irrigation planning, cooperative development, farmer training, and long-term operational management support.

Because of the size and complexity of the irrigation infrastructure, successful operation cannot be achieved solely through individual farm management. Instead, the project depends on structured farmer cooperatives capable of collectively managing irrigation systems, water distribution, maintenance, production planning, and market coordination. The SVTP cooperative approach was heavily influenced by Agricane’s highly successful Phata Cooperative model, which demonstrates how organized small-grower systems can operate efficiently, sustainably, and commercially at scale. The Phata model became a key reference point during the development of the SVTP cooperative framework and continues to shape farmer organization strategies across the region.

Agricane’s Hope Farm training center will also play a key role in preparing farmers and extension workers for participation in the SVTP. Hope Farm offers hands-on training in irrigation management, climate-smart agriculture, cooperative governance, crop diversification, and modern farming systems to ensure communities are ready to maximize the opportunities created by the new infrastructure.
