Kasinthula Cooperative, Shire Valley
The Kasinthula project transformed more than 700 smallholder farmers into owners of one of Malawi’s largest irrigated sugarcane schemes, creating sustainable livelihoods through commercial agriculture, irrigation, and cooperative enterprise.
Established in the Lower Shire Valley, Kasinthula Cane Growers is a farmer-owned sugarcane enterprise developed to convert marginal land into productive irrigated agriculture. Agricane designed and developed the original irrigation scheme before providing long-term agricultural, financial, and operational management support. Today, the scheme comprises more than 1,400 hectares of irrigated sugarcane owned by 762 smallholder farmers and remains one of Malawi’s pioneering commercial outgrower models. , development, rehabilitation, management and training support
Kasinthula has become a leading example of successful smallholder commercial agriculture in Africa, demonstrating how irrigation, cooperative governance, access to finance, and professional farm management can improve rural livelihoods at scale. Beyond sugar production, the project generates employment, strengthens household incomes, and provides valuable lessons for agricultural development initiatives such as the Shire Valley Transformation Project, where farmer-led irrigation schemes will play a central role in future economic growth.
