Shire Valley Conservation Project

The Shire Valley Conservation Project protects endangered riparian forests, wildlife habitats, and the internationally important Elephant Marsh wetlands, while creating sustainable opportunities for local communities to benefit from conservation.

Led by Agricane’s conservation and community teams, the Shire Valley Conservation Project is a long-term initiative to protect one of Malawi’s most unique and threatened ecosystems. Neighboring Agricane's Kaombe Ranch and centered around the Thangadzi River Conservancy and the Elephant Marsh wetlands, the project combines habitat restoration, wildlife conservation, environmental education, research, volunteer programs, and eco-tourism, and community partnerships to safeguard biodiversity while supporting sustainable livelihoods in the Lower Shire Valley.

The project protects more than 700 hectares of endangered riparian forest adjacent to the Elephant Marsh, a Ramsar-recognized wetland renowned for its exceptional birdlife and ecological importance. Through wildlife reintroductions, habitat management, anti-poaching activities, ecological monitoring, and community-led conservation initiatives, the project is helping restore biodiversity in a landscape under increasing pressure from deforestation, charcoal production, and population growth.

Revenue generated through eco-tourism at Thangadzi Lodge and volunteer conservation programs is reinvested into conservation activities and community development, creating a model where agriculture, wildlife, and local livelihoods can thrive together.
