Mangoes and bananas

Our Sangowa Research Farm is the hub of our sub-tropical fruit development program. We are developing banana for domestic markets and large-scale mango production, a crop well-suited to the Shire Valley's lowlands, to supply Malawi’s domestic market as well as create export opportunities.

Low altitude bananas and mangos

Agricane is also actively trialing banana production systems on our Sangowa Research Farm for domestic markets,  as well as mangoes for export, helping producers diversify their agricultural opportunities beyond traditional crops. Through ongoing research, trials, and commercial production, this project is also building the technical knowledge, infrastructure, and market linkages needed to support farmers transitioning into high-value cash crops as irrigation expands under the Shire Valley Transformation Program.

Local and export markets

Bananas are a key source of income for hundreds of local traders. However, limited production in the low-altitude Shire Valley means reliance on imports from higher-altitude regions at a premium cost and transport-affected quality. We are working with traders to identify high-quality, suitable market varieties and reliable supply chains, ready for local farmer adoption as the Shire Valley Transformation project progresses.

Meanwhile, mangoes present a valuable export opportunity, with low-altitude production enabling out-of-season harvests that command premium prices in regional markets.

Sustainable Productivity

As climate pressures grow, our Innovation Hub combines efficient water management, crop improvement, and field research to boost productivity while reducing environmental impacts. Through SRC Biologicals, we also promote biological technologies that improve soil health, strengthen crop resilience, and reduce reliance on synthetic inputs.
